American Bald Eagles Photos - Status
In 1973, the Endangered Species Act was adopted and in 1976 the American Bald Eagles were listed as a national endangered species. Thanks to protective measures, the species turned to threatened
status in the middle of the 1990's. Today, Bald Eagles are common in 48 states. The killing of and trading in body parts of Bald Eagles are illegal in the USA; poachers pay great fines. But still there are feathers and talons of Bald Eagles sold on the black market.
Nowadays, causes of death to the American Bald Eagle are: landing on power poles, lead poisoning from eating game that was wounded or killed with pellets, collision with vehicles, starvation in winter and drowning due to misjudgment of altitude during fishing.
American Bald Eagles Photos - Senses
Like all eagles, Bald Eagles have excellent eyesight. The eagle's eye is as large as human's, but it is at least four times sharper. An American Bald Eagle that flies at the altitude of 1000 feet over open country is able to spot prey over an area of 3 square miles.
Their unique feature is having two centers of focus, which allow them to see both forward and to the side at the same time. Bald Eagles see fish in the water while soaring or gliding; they evaluate the distance to the prey and attack it. Dead fish is easily located, because it floats with the light underside up. Young American Bald Eagles may attack objects, like plastic bottles floating below the surface of the water.
