American Bald Eagles Photos - History

Before the arrival of the first settlers to America, there were about 500,000 of American Bald Eagles. They inhabited the banks of every large river and lake and nested in 45 states. As the human population grew, bald eagle's population began to decline. There is no single reason for the decline.

The main reason was competition for food, because the people and the eagles hunted and fished for the same game; and humans, with weapons at their disposal, had a great advantage. Another reason is habitat destruction that began early in the 19th century. Bald Eagles were left fewer places to hunt and nest. Many people considered eagles to be pests and killed them in large numbers.

In the middle of the 20th century another problem arose: DDT and other pesticides came into use. Small animals ate plants that contained dangerous agents; water from the fields came into rivers. And, fish fed on contaminated plankton. Eagles consumed animals and fish concentrated with DDT and other agents in their organisms. The poison harmed the eggs, too. The shell became too thin and the eggs did not hatch. Many birds have become infertile due to these types of chemicals.

About 100,000 Bald Eagles were killed in Alaska from 1917 to 1953 due to the bounty. The government paid for every American Bald Eagle killed. Only in the 1960's were American Bald Eagles declared as endangered while many individuals and groups began to work towards the conservation of the species.
