American Bald Eagles Photos - Range

American Bald Eagles are the only eagles unique to North America. The scientific name of the species is Haliaeetus leucocephalus; it means "a sea eagle with a white head." Bald Eagles can be found in the vast territory from Alaska and Canada to Northern Mexico. About half of the world's population of the American Bald Eagle lives in Alaska.

Bald Eagles inhabit mostly forests near the shores of lakes and rivers. They build nests on the top of large trees and use one nest for many years, rebuilding and adding more material to it. Young eagles stay in the same area where they were born. The largest nest of Bald Eagles may weigh a ton and be up to 8 feet across.

American Bald Eagles Photos - Description

Their white head and tail, solid brown body, and large yellow, curved bill identify adult American Bald Eagles. This species reaches maturity at the age of 4-5 years. Younger birds are solid with blotchy white patches on the underside and tail. Adults are about 1 meter in height; their wingspan is up to 2.3 meters. Females are larger than males, as it often happens with birds of prey. Males weigh 3.5-4 kg; and females are up to 6 kg. Adult Bald Eagles have up to 7,000 feathers. The average lifespan of the Bald Eagle is 20-30 years in the wild, but they live longer in captivity

American Bald Eagles Photos - Reproduction

Bald Eagles lay from 1 to 4 eggs in April or May and both parents take part in rearing the youth. The incubation lasts about 35 days. If the nest is disturbed during this time or when the eaglets are hatched, Bald Eagles can abandon it and the chicks will die. The eaglets are able to fly at the age of 3-4 months and, up to this time both parents bring food to them. Usually only the strongest eaglet survives, because it fights with the weaker one for food. The first year is very difficult for young American Bald Eagles; about half of them die due to lack of food, bad weather, human interference and diseases.
